Deaderick Streetscape Improvement Project

Metro Public Works is pleased to report that construction work to update pedestrian amenities and make other improvements along Deaderick Street in downtown Nashville is complete. Mayor Karl Dean and Metro Public Works hosted a grand opening for the project on October 8, 2009, to celebrate Tennessee's first "Green Street."
Metro’s plan has transformed Deaderick Street into a more appealing and functional avenue for the benefit of all downtown pedestrians. Outdated MTA bus shelters and rows of severely distressed and dying trees have been replaced with enhanced streetscape amenities, including repaired sidewalks, new trees, green planting spaces, landscaping and upgraded street and pedestrian safety lighting.
Some of the existing trees have been combined with new trees and plantings that are better suited for an urban environment. New green spaces are now in place, including sidewalk planting beds and a landscaped median extending the entire length of the corridor. The Streetscape plan allows Metro to provide an irrigation system to ensure that the trees and new plantings stay healthy and thrive.
The project also includes new traffic signals and pedestrian signals; new street lights; new pedestrian lights; additional on-street parking; new solar-powered parking meters; and new paving and striping.
Other sustainable initiatives included in this project are:
- Collection of rainwater for planting beds
- Recycled concrete will be used for construction
- Pervious concrete between the planting beds
- Consideration of LED pedestrian lighting
