Commissioner Steve AbernathyPersonal Info:

  • Born August 24, 1954 in Clarksville, Tennessee, has lived in Middle, Tennessee almost 50 years, moved to Nashville in October of 2000.
  • A widower with three daughters and six grandchildren.

Career Background:

  • Mr. Abernathy began his career with South Central Bell (SCB) in 1973 at the Clarksville Office.  He worked in several different Non-management positions in the Plant Department and was promoted in 1978.
  • Mr. Abernathy moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee in 1981 with SCB and worked at the Belle Meade Plaza office supporting Installation & Maintenance (I&M) orders for Middle Tennessee.
  • From 1984 to 1998 Mr. Abernathy worked in Atlanta, Georgia, Brentwood, Tennessee, and Parsippany, New Jersey performing  several different Management positions with AT&T.
  • February of 1998, Mr. Abernathy was promoted to District Manager and transferred to the Denver Factory with Lucent Technologies and managed the National Customer Service center.
  • Mr. Abernathy received another promotion in October of 1999 when he moved to St. Louis and took over as Area Services Vice President (ASVP) for Avaya Communications supporting I&M in Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.
  • In October of 2000, Mr. Abernathy moved back to Nashville as ASVP and managed I&M for Avaya in the previous three states, plus Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana.
  • Mr Abernathy retired from Avaya Communication after 28 years of service on July 31st, 2001, when offered an early retirement package.
  • Mr Abernathy began his 2nd career with PM Telco on August 1st, 2001 as VP and CFO, and continues to work in that position today.

Other activities:

  • Served on the Board of Directors of Tennessee Telco Credit Union for three years, 1995-1998
  • Poll Officer for Cane Ridge Precinct, 32-03 since 2005
  • Director of North Pettus Road Neighborhood Watch since 2003
  • President of Cane Ridge Community Club from 2005-2006, and continues as Director/Treasurer
  • President of Davidson County Council of Community Clubs for 2009
  • Treasurer for Cane Ridge Baptist Church
  • Captain of Autism Speaks team that raised over $4400 in September of 2008
  • Co-Chair of Autism Speaks 2011-05-02

Education

  • Graduated Clarksville High School in 1972
  • Attended APSU for one semester
  • Attended several different Management Training courses with SCB & AT&T, Communications Workshop, Leadership training, Labor Relations, Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Project Management, etc
