Learn about the Clean Water Nashville Program

The purpose of this website is to share details of a new phase of an ongoing plan to improve quality of the Cumberland River.

In March of 2009, Metro Water Services entered into an agreement brought by federal courts to clean up Nashville’s waterways by limiting or eliminating the flow of sewage into the Cumberland River and the tributaries that feed it and to ensure compliance with the federal Clean Water Act of 1972.

The consent decree features different methods that mandate MWS’ approach to Nashville’s two different sewer systems: the Sanitary Sewer System (SSS) and the Combined Sewer System (CSS).
