PUBLIC INPUT WILL ENHANCE MWS PLAN FOR A CLEANER CUMBERLAND

Metro Water Services is holding public meetings in March to collect citizen input for a plan being developed to ensure the Cumberland River meets Clean Water Act requirements. The focus of the plan will be to reduce and in some cases eliminate occasional overflows of wastewater from the combined sewage system into the Cumberland River, Nashville’s most precious natural resource. On many heavy rain days the system is overwhelmed and wastewater can flow into the Cumberland at levels that exceed EPA standards.

Throughout the 1990s, Metro Nashville made major investments to update its urban-area sewer system to significantly reduce combined sewer overflows into the Cumberland River. Major progress was made, and as a result the Cumberland is a much cleaner source for drinking water and recreation.

The meetings will include an overview of the combined sewer system along with options for improvement of Nashville’s Combined Sewer System and reduce overflows into and to improve water quality of the Cumberland River.
