The Treatment Process

Nashville’s water supply comes from the Cumberland River, which provides a steady and relatively pure source of water for both water filtration plants. As the water begins its journey from the river to your tap, it is first screened to remove larger objects such as twigs. Chemicals, known as coagulants, are added to the water and mixed well. These chemicals do not stay in the water, but help cause contaminants such as mud and algae to cling to them. Next the water slowly flows through settling tanks, where the larger particles are allowed to sink to the bottom. The water from the settling tanks passes through filters, and at this point the water is crystal clear. Before it enters the distribution system, a small amount of chlorine and fluoride are added. Chlorine prevents bacteria from developing, and fluoride has been found be beneficial in preventing tooth decay.
