Art Therapy at Meharry

District 21, Meharry/Fisk

Therapeutic and Creative Arts was awarded $3,650 to support the Art Therapy at Meharry project, hosted by the Elam Center at Meharry Medical College. This proect is a therapeutic, art-based initiative that empowers participants to take a leadership role in their own mental health through art-making. The project's goal was to utilize art therapy, music, poetry, drama and visual art classes to decrease the current stigma surrounding mental health. THRIVE funds supported supplies and materials and artist fees for artists Kimberly Brown, Heather M.D. McHenry, Henry L. Jones, and Jeni Calhoun. An exhibit and auction at the project’s end generated funds to replenish materials to further the program. Through the collection of pre-and post-evaluations, the project generated data that supports the sustainability of art-based programming in mental healthcare, and the future of projects similar to Art Therapy at Meharry. The project events were provided at no cost.
