District Energy System

Karen Bennett

DES Board Chair

Karen BennettEighth District Council Member Karen Bennett was appointed by Mayor Karl Dean to the Nashville District Energy System Advisory Board and has been elected board chair.

“I am pleased to serve as Chairperson of the District Energy System Advisory Board,” stated Bennett, “Nashville’s District Energy System is a great resource to our city that few people seem to know much about. Since the construction of the new environmentally friendly cogeneration plant five years ago, Metropolitan Government and the system operator have continued to make operating improvements that have provided greater energy and cost efficiencies to system customers. We are now exploring some specific capital improvement opportunities, perhaps through the reinvestment of some of the current savings, that will pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time and provide significant additional cost benefits to current and future system customers. It is an exciting time to serve on this board.”

“With customers like the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and the Viridian, DES continues to be a vital component of downtown development,” added Bennett. “I look forward to helping DES remain a strong option for new and existing customers.”

Bennett is a residential real estate appraiser by profession. She serves on the Fair and Farmers Market; Traffic and Parking; and Planning, Zoning, Historical committees of the Metro Council; and she chairs the Public Safety - Beer and Regulated Beverages committee.

Born in Nashville, Bennett is a graduate of Belmont University and Goodpasture High School. She is Director of Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, a founding member of Capitol View Neighbors, a member of the Dickerson Road Merchants Association, and a member of Two Rivers Baptist Church.
