Expanded School Health Model Public Investment Plan (2017)
Dr. Bill Paul, Metro Public Health Department
School nurses improve attendance and can address a full spectrum of health issues in schools, but not all students in Metro Nashville Public Schools have access to a full time school nurse. The current school nurse program focuses on the students who require skilled nursing services (approximately 193 students in 90 schools). Nurses are assigned between 3-4 schools and travel between them, often multiple times a day, to serve these students that require daily medical procedures according to a set schedule.
The CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend one nurse per 750 students. Our current program has one nurse per approximately 1500 students, half the recommended coverage.
