Nashville Fire Department has a thirteen week fire recruit training program. To become a fire recruit an applicant will begin the selection process through several testing evaluation's and a written examination. If selected after fulfilling the hiring requirements an individual will have an opportunity to train as a fire recruit.

A fire recruit will attend an orientation for two months prior to their actual hire date. The department staff will explain what is expected of a new employee upon their attendance. Rules, regulation and fitness requirements will be discussed.

Suppression training is a 26 week course for recruits without an EMT License and 13 weeks for recruits who begin the academy with an EMT License. The course will be outlined in the first day of training. Both physical and academic performance is required for successful completion of the program. During this program a recruit has little to no time other than fire department studies. A recruit is required to complete online quizzes, workbooks, practicals and exam preps outside of class.
