Mayor Barry convened a set of five Youth Violence Summits in order to hear directly from Nashville’s youth about the issue. Reducing youth violence through expanded hope and opportunity will take all of the community working together to solve the challenges faced, but listening to those whose lives are impacted the most by youth violence is most important. Local youth helped to identify issues that lead to youth violence, what programs and services are already in place, then discussed possible solutions. The culmination of the summits is the Youth Violence Report, which outlines steps moving forward. The summits not only lead to the recommendations outlined in the report, they also empowered hundreds of students to come together and discuss their common concerns, learn from one another, and take back those lessons to their friends and classmates in a way that has sparked important conversations where it matters most – in our schools.
