Mayor's Scholars Academy

Free Summer Program at Four High Schools

The Mayor’s Scholars Academy is a free academic enrichment program that takes place over four weeks in the summer. The purpose of the program is to help students succeed in high school and prepare for college. Activities include developing math and writing skills, arts, ACT prep and college visits. Lunch and weekly field trips are provided at no cost. The program will be held at Cane Ridge High School, Hunter’s Lane High School, and NEW this year, McGavock High School, and Whites Creek High School. 2015 Program dates: June 8 – July 3, 2015 Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Program Expectations

At Scholars Academy we enhance student’s knowledge of core content subjects (Math & Language Arts), explore the arts, health and wellness, and build positive relationships that propel students toward success. We believe that our Scholars are college material and that we can build their college knowledge and college aspiration this summer. To meet these goals, we have the following expectations for all Scholars.

Guidelines

  1. No cell phones or electronic devices
  2. Use appropriate scholarly language
  3. Wear appropriate scholarly attire

Zero Tolerance

The Mayor’s Scholars Academy is a safe place for all participants and we know that character counts in all interactions.  With this in mind, we have a Zero Tolerance Policy with Bullying of any kind.  Physical, verbal, teasing, harassment, etc. will not be tolerated. We expect our Scholars will meet this expectation with ease.

Scholar Attendance

We expect each Scholar to attend the Academy every day.  We know that persistence counts. Awards will be given for all Scholars with perfect attendance.

Student Application

Please note the student application deadline has been extended to April 22.

Students who are currently in the 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th grade in Metro schools are eligible to apply. The student enrollment process is a rolling admission from February 16, 2015 to April 22, 2015. Students and their parents will be notified about their enrollment status on or before April 30, 2015. At that time, enrolled students also will receive further instructions regarding transportation and program details.

Teacher Application

The Mayor’s Office is seeking a dynamic team of teachers and youth development staff to work with 400 of Nashville’s rising 8th-11th grade students in the summer of 2015. Scholars Academy focuses on academic skills needed in high school and college, while also supporting college aspiration goals and college access tools. Applications for Teacher Leader and Site Director positions will be accepted from February 16, 2015 through March 31, 2015. Applicants will receive a response to an application for employment by April 30, 2015.
