A resolution requesting that the Tennessee Department of Transportation consider neighbors’ concerns and prioritize certain features during the improvements scheduled along Interstate 440.
WHEREAS, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is responsible for the state system of highways and interstate highways in Tennessee pursuant to Tennessee Code Annotated §54-1-126; and
WHEREAS, fixing infrastructure and improving roadways in and around Nashville are of critical importance in both maintaining the economic growth of the metropolitan area and supporting the increase in density in the region; and
WHEREAS, TDOT is currently constructing improvements along I-440 that will help with the unprecedented increase in population and traffic congestion in Nashville going forward; and
WHEREAS, while this project is important, it is also important consider and mitigate the negative impacts that construction and increased traffic can have on neighbors and those who travel I-440 every day; and
WHEREAS, it is important to recognize that the hours of construction and increased noise level associated with such construction can disturb neighbors; and
WHEREAS, it would be beneficial to build additional sound barriers along I-440 to reduce the disruption caused by increased traffic and construction noise; and
WHEREAS, while construction improvements such as those planned along I-440 will be beneficial once completed, these improvements will likely increase traffic problems in the short-term and increased vehicle usage in the future; and
WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the value of existing greenspace and vegetation within and along I-440 and the environmental, noise reduction, and aesthetic benefits of this greenspace and vegetation; and
WHEREAS, TDOT should take care to abate any potential environmental issues that may be associated with the construction along I-440 and make best efforts to preserve and increase greenspace and vegetation; and
WHEREAS, these issues are considered high priorities by the Metropolitan Council.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as requesting that the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) consider neighbors’ concerns over noise, aesthetics, traffic, and environmental issues and to prioritize certain features such as sound barriers, greenspace, and vegetation during the improvements scheduled along Interstate 440.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to the TDOT Commissioner, ¬¬¬John Schroer.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
