A resolution recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the Dove Awards and celebrating the unveiling of the Belmont Church and Koinonia Coffeehouse and Contemporary Christian Music historic marker.
WHEREAS, the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Awards have honored outstanding achievements and excellence in Christian Music since 1969. The Dove Awards are presented to gospel music artists who create a variety of musical styles, including inspirational, pop, gospel, southern gospel, musicals, praise and worship, country and bluegrass, rock, rap/hip hop and urban, and more; and
WHEREAS, the inaugural Dove Awards were held at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, and the ceremony moved to Nashville in 1971. Other than a brief two years at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in 2011 and 2012, the Dove Awards have been held in Nashville ever since; and
WHEREAS, religious music has been integral to Nashville’s identity as “Music City,” from early music publishing houses to the international impact of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Key artists nurtured locally in the 1970s eventually crossed over to mainstream fans and by the 1990s, Contemporary Christian and Gospel Music outsold jazz and classical. Nashville also became the capital of this new genre, serving as home to the Gospel Music Association, major labels and a growing creative community; and
WHEREAS, the Koinonia (Greek for “fellowship”) Coffehouse opened in 1973 with artists such as Dogwood, Fireworks and Brown Bannister boldly sharing their faith through contemporary music. It became a destination for “Jesus Music” artists nationwide as young talent such as Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith shared their first songs. The neighboring Belmont Church helped with overflow crowds, co-hosting early Contemporary Christian Music recording artists such as Honeytree, Randy Matthews, Don Francisco and more; and
WHEREAS, the 50th Annual GMA Dove Awards will be held at Lipscomb University’s Allen Area on Tuesday, October 15, 2019; and
WHEREAS, this year, the Historical Commission of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County approved a historical marker honoring the Belmont Church and Koinonia and Contemporary Christian Music which will be unveiled and dedicated on Nashville's historic Music Row at 16th and Grand on July 25, 2019; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County recognizes the impact of Contemporary Christian Music on Music City through these two significant events.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
