Resolution RS2019-129

A Resolution recognizing 2020 as The Year of STEM/STEAM in Nashville.

WHEREAS, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education focuses on teaching students in an interdisciplinary and applied approach; and
WHEREAS, there are STEM certified MNPS schools at every level – in elementary, middle, and high schools – across Nashville; and

WHEREAS, MNPS has 23 competitive FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics teams, with three elementary school teams, thirteen middle school teams, and seven high school teams; and

WHEREAS, MNPS has launched STEAM Expeditions in the 2019-2020 school year, which provide learning experiences with a purpose to 31 schools and 15,000 students. All learning events are focused on STEAM partners in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, Siemens is hosting monthly STEM events in 26 middle schools. These events help to mentor and excite students about the world of STEM; and

WHEREAS, MNPS has 13 schools monitoring Nashville’s air quality in partnership with the EPA and American Lung Association; and

WHEREAS, MNPS STEAM Middle Schools have a STEAM Project Expo in May 2020 to showcase their authentic work products; and

WHEREAS, in Spring 2020, there will be a rocketry expo for STEAM elementary and middle school students in partnership with Fisk University, as well as plans for an art showcase as part of this event; and

WHEREAS, students from STEAM elementary and middle schools will showcase their creativity at the MNPS Invention Convention in February 2020; and

WHEREAS, students from around MNPS work with Urban Green Lab to monitor food waste to bring awareness to composting and best practices for sustainability; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of MNPS’s focus on STEM and STEAM programs and curriculum, it is fitting and proper that 2020 be recognized as The Year of STEM/STEAM in Nashville.


Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing 2020 as The Year of STEM/STEAM in Nashville.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
