A resolution recognizing Representative Sherry Jones for her many contributions to the City of Nashville and the State of Tennessee as a member of the Tennessee General Assembly.
WHEREAS, for over twenty years, Sherry Jones has represented a portion of Nashville and Davidson County in the Tennessee General Assembly House of Representatives as the Representative for District 59; and
WHEREAS, from the 99th through the 110th General Assemblies, Rep. Jones has served her constituents with honor and distinction; and
WHEREAS, Rep. Jones was active in leadership roles within the House of Representatives, serving as the Chair of the Davidson County Delegation during the 100th and 101th General Assemblies and also as Minority Whip for the 108th General Assembly; and
WHEREAS, she has held leadership positions including chair and vice chair of the House Children and Family Affairs Committee, chair of the House Domestic Relations Subcommittee and House Consumer Affairs Subcommittee, and has also served as a member of such committees as the House Consumer and Employees Affairs Committee, the House Health and Human Resources Committee, the House Local Government Committee, the House Civil Justice Committee, and the House Employee Affairs Subcommittee; and
WHEREAS, Rep. Jones has been a tireless advocate for children during her time in the General Assembly, sponsoring countless pieces of legislation about and for children and the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, volunteering her time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), and serving as a founding member of Advocates for Women’s and Kid’s Equality (AWAKE); and
WHEREAS, she has also led the charge against domestic violence, serving as the Chairman of the Domestic Violence State Coordinating Council and as a Board Member and Chair of the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence; and
WHEREAS, Rep. Jones has been recognized by numerous nonprofit organizations, and has been awarded such honors as the Legislator of the Year Namesake Award from the Nashville Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the United Way Leadership Award, Vanderbilt Law School Leadership Award, Tennessee March of Dimes Leadership Award, and the Tennessee AFL-CIO Leadership Award, to name only a few; and
WHEREAS, prior to her election to the Tennessee House of Representatives, Rep. Jones served as a member of the Metropolitan Council from 1987 to 1995 and as a member of the Metropolitan Planning Commission from 1991 to 1994; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council hereby seeks to recognize Representative Sherry Jones for her service to the City of Nashville and the State of Tennessee through her service in the Tennessee General Assembly.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Representative Sherry Jones for her contributions to the City of Nashville and the State of Tennessee as a member of the Tennessee General Assembly.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Sherry Jones.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
