Resolution RS2019-1831

A resolution honoring Terry Clements upon the occasion of his retirement from the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corporation.

WHEREAS, the Mission of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. is “To maximize the economic contribution of the convention and hospitality industries to the total community by marketing and developing Nashville as a premier domestic and international destination.” Over Terry’s long career, he has embraced that Mission and helped to make it a reality; and

WHEREAS, Terry Clements is the Vice President of Government and Community relations for the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. and has been a driving force for the massive growth of Nashville’s tourism industry for the last 47 years; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Memphis State University, Terry started his career in the tourism industry as a general manager for Gray Line Tours in 1972 and in 1976 became the Director of Tourism for the Nashville Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, Terry was one of the first people hired when the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau was originally created; and

WHEREAS, Terry was able to take Nashville’s top entertainers to perform for and testify to the appeal of Music City, and the estimated 15.2 million visitors in 2018 is a testament to his vision; and

WHEREAS, over the course of Terry’s career, Nashville has seen a growth in visitor spending from $200 million in 1978 up to $6.5 billion in 2017. His help in attracting large-scale events as well as maintaining the day-to-day tourism has been key to this success; and

WHEREAS, in true Nashville fashion, Terry survived the 1998 tornadoes by hunkering down on the floor of Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and congratulates Terry Clements upon his retirement and commends him for his service to the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp. and the thriving tourism industry of Nashville.


Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Terry Clements for his extraordinary impact over his 47 years of promoting tourism in Nashville.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
