Resolution RS2019-46

A resolution honoring Commander Paul Shelburne Trickey upon his retirement from service with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

WHEREAS, after 34 years of service, Commander Paul Shelburne Trickey is retiring from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD); and

WHEREAS, Paul Shelburne Trickey joined the MNPD as a Police Officer Trainee on October 16, 1980 and graduated from the MNPD Academy the following February, a member of Session 8. After rotating among the precincts during his probationary period, Officer Trickey was assigned to the West Precinct; and

WHEREAS, in 1983, Officer Trickey briefly resigned from the MNPD to further his education, earning a bachelor’s degree from David Lipscomb University. However, he rejoined MNPD as part of the West Precinct in November 1988 and later moved to the Central Precinct, where he was promoted to sergeant; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Trickey then worked in the Accreditation Unit where, through his work and that of his colleagues, the MNPD became, for the first time, fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA) in July 1994. MNPD has been continuously accredited since; and

WHEREAS, during this same period, Sergeant Trickey obtained a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Trickey was transferred to the Vice Unit and was later promoted to lieutenant in 2001. He then became the supervisor of the East Precinct’s evening shift, before moving to the Strategic Development Division; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Trickey was promoted to captain on May 23, 2004, and became one of the department’s original Field Supervisors – captains who oversee departmental operations during overnight hours. Captain Trickey then lead the Strategic Development Division and, later, the Specialized Investigations Division; and

WHEREAS, on January 1, 2013, Captain Trickey was appointed Commander of the MNPD’s South Precinct. Commander Trickey is retiring from the MNPD with a total of 34 years of service to the Nashville community and it is fitting and proper that he be recognized for his hard word and dedication to the City of Nashville.


Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring Commander Paul Shelburne Trickey upon his retirement from service following 34 years of dedicated service with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
