Resolution RS2019-139

A Resolution honoring Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee for 50 years of service to Nashville.

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee (BBBSMT) has been successfully facilitating one-to-one mentoring relationships for youth since 1969, building the next generation of citizens and stronger communities; and

WHEREAS, as BBBSMT celebrates their 50th year, they remain focused on supporting caring adults (Bigs) walking beside individual youth (Littles), helping them build resiliency from the adversity in their lives, find their talents and reach their potential; and

WHEREAS, following evidence-based national standards and practices for youth mentoring ensures their high-quality programing and outcomes that are among the highest in the country; and

WHEREAS, last year BBBSMT served 1,165 youth, focusing on serving the young people most in need: 93% of the youth received free/reduced lunches at school; 81% resided in non-two-parent homes; 84% were minority youth; 26% had a parent in prison; and

WHEREAS, despite their increased need for mentoring, these youth are less likely to have access to a mentor than their more affluent peers;

WHEREAS, BBBSMT strives to close that mentoring gap by serving more high-need youth with caring adult mentors; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters one-to-one mentoring promotes emotional support, forms positive social skills, and cultivates protective behaviors as well as feelings of safety and security while enhancing academic skills and producing greater positive relationships with both family and peers; and

WHEREAS, BBBSMT has served over 10,000 youth in mentoring matches over the last 20 years, with over 64,000 mentoring hours completed annually; and

WHEREAS, they have received the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) Quality award for the 8 out of the last 9 years, ranking us in the top 12% of all BBBS affiliates. Quality is defined by above average results in match length, match strength, and youth outcomes; and

WHEREAS, BBBSMT has innovative and dynamic programming to meet the challenges our communities face, bringing high-quality, impactful programming to youth most in need in our communities.
