Resolution RS2018-1079

A resolution recognizing the month of March as “Women’s History Month” in Nashville and Davidson County, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, the month of March is nationally recognized as “Women’s History Month,” and provides the opportunity to honor and celebrate the vital role of women, past and present, in American history; and

WHEREAS, “Women’s History Month” originally began as a local, week-long celebration in 1978 in Santa Rosa, California, and subsequently spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History celebrations the following year; and

WHEREAS, in 1987, the United States Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month”; and

WHEREAS, The National Women’s History Project selects and publishes a yearly theme and has designated the theme for National Women’s History 2018 as Nevertheless She Persisted: Honoring Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination Against Women; and

WHEREAS, the 2018 National Women’s History theme presents the opportunity to honor women who have shaped America’s history and its future through their tireless commitment to ending discrimination against women and girls; and

WHEREAS, this theme will celebrate women fighting not only against sexism, but also against many intersecting forms of discrimination, including discrimination based upon race, ethnicity, class, disability, sexual orientation, veteran status, and many other categories; and

WHEREAS, women of every race, class, sexual orientation, and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our Nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and

WHEREAS, women continue to play critical economic, cultural, and social roles in every sphere of life in America by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working inside and outside of the home; and

WHEREAS, American women have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and the peace movement, which create a more equitable and just society for all; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the month of March as “Women’s History Month” in Nashville and Davidson County, and thereby honor the countless contributions of women.
