Resolution RS2019-1833

A resolution expressing the desire to provide childcare at Metropolitan Council meetings and calling for a Request for Proposals process.

WHEREAS, a lack of childcare can be a barrier to meeting attendance for parents who wish to take part in the democratic process; and

WHEREAS, this is an issue which can keep members of the community, especially single parents of young children, locked out of the legislative process as both constituents and members of the council; and

WHEREAS, it is important for Nashville residents to have say in the future of their community, and implementing a childcare program would foster a more inclusive environment for parents and caregivers who may not be able to attend Council meetings without it; and

WHEREAS, other cities have begun offering childcare at city council meetings to the great benefit of both constituents and the council representatives; and

WHEREAS, other cities have used requests for proposals to solicit bids from childcare providers, in order to contract for childcare at city meetings; and

WHEREAS, implementing a childcare program for council meetings would increase participation in this democratic process and provide a path to inclusion for parents and caregivers in the community to run for office and attend meetings.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as expressing the desire to provide childcare at Metropolitan Council meetings and calling for a Request for Proposals process.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
