Resolution RS2020-314

A Resolution recognizing the 10th Anniversary of the May 2010 Flood in Nashville and honoring the memory of those killed.

WHEREAS, ten years ago this month, in early May 2010, Nashville experienced the worst flood in its history; and

WHEREAS, over 17 inches of rain fell in a matter of days, the highest amount of rainfall in more than 140 years of recorded history in Nashville. 13 inches of rain fell in 36 hours, more than doubling the previous two-day rainfall record; and

WHEREAS, the Cumberland River crested at nearly 52 feet – 12 feet above flood stage; and

WHEREAS, the flood caused more than $2 billion in private property damage and approximately $120 million in damage to public infrastructure, impacting thousands of businesses and individuals, destroying homes, disrupting thousands of lives, and killing 26 in flooding across Tennessee and Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, 11 individuals were killed in Nashville: Daniel Brown, Andrew and Martha England, Joseph and Bessie Formosa, Joshua Landtroop, Mary Jane McCormack, Bill and Frankie Rutledge, Danny Tomlinson, and Robert Woods; and

WHEREAS, in the years following the flood, Nashville rebuilt. Over 29,000 volunteers gave more than 375,000 service hours to recovery and rebuilding efforts in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, it is especially important to remember the incredible response of Nashvillians during these difficult times after the March 3, 2020 tornado and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the impacts of which Nashville is still dealing with; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the 10th anniversary of this tragic flood and honor the memory of the 11 individuals killed in the flood in Nashville.


Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 10th Anniversary of the May 2010 Flood in Nashville and honor the memory of those killed.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
