A resolution honoring Janet Jernigan upon the occasion of her retirement from FiftyForward.
WHEREAS, Janet Jernigan is the Executive Director of FiftyForward and has dedicated herself to the needs of a growing elder and caregiver population for the past 28 years; and
WHEREAS, launched in 1956, FiftyForward is Middle Tennessee’s premier agency serving individuals 50 and older; and
WHEREAS, FiftyForward’s lifelong learning centers, programs and services help older adults live fuller, more productive lives with a sense of dignity and self-worth; and
WHEREAS, Janet Jernigan has demonstrated her commitment to the FiftyForward mission to support, champion and enhance life for those 50 and older; and
WHEREAS, under Janet Jernigan’s leadership, FiftyForward offers hundreds of educational and wellness programs, supportive care services for frail or homebound individuals, resources for caregivers, and volunteer opportunities; and
WHEREAS, annually, FiftyForward makes a significant impact in the lives of nearly 20,000 older adults, their family members, and at-risk children served through their intergenerational programs; and
WHEREAS, during her career at FiftyForward, the annual budget has grown from $1 million to $4.8 million and the organization’s customer service rating exceeds 95 percent; and
WHEREAS, Janet Jernigan was the first inductee into the Council of Community Services’ Hall of Fame for Executive Directors; and
WHEREAS, in 1991, the Davidson County Business and Professional Women named her “Woman of the Year” and recipient of the Bess Maddux Award; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, Janet Jernigan became the first CEO of the Year award recipient from the Center for Nonprofit Management; and
WHEREAS, in 2000, Ms. Jernigan successfully led the first major capital/endowment campaign in the organization’s history, raising $15 million to fund the construction of three centers; and
WHEREAS, in 2009, Janet Jernigan received the ATHENA Award, Nashville’s highest honor for female leaders; and
WHEREAS, Janet Jernigan is a role model for active aging and has successfully been competing in running competitions for 40 years and in triathlons for the past 30 years; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and congratulates Janet Jernigan upon her retirement and commends her for her service to FiftyForward and the citizens of Nashville.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Janet Jernigan for 28 years of service to FiftyForward.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Janet Jernigan.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
