Resolution RS2020-231

A resolution recognizing March 28, 2020, as “Box 55 Day” in Nashville.

WHEREAS, in 1952, Mayor Ben West and Chief John D. Ragsdale of the Nashville Fire Department organized the Nashville Fire Buffs (now the Box 55 Association) by equipping a city bus to be the first emergency vehicle in Nashville to respond to fires for rehabilitation purposes; and

WHEREAS, throughout their almost 68 years of service, Box 55 Association’s mission has remained the same: “To offer rehabilitation services to the men and women of the Nashville Fire Department, on scene and during all types of emergencies in Nashville”; and

WHEREAS, the Box 55 Association is a group of men and women volunteers dedicated to serving and supporting the Metropolitan Nashville Fire Department by responding to fire scenes, disasters, and rescue incidents; and

WHEREAS, Box 55 volunteers extend their services to other first responder agencies in Nashville such as the Nashville Police Department, Emergency Medical Services, and the Office of Emergency Management, as well as agencies outside of Davidson County who call for mutual aid; and

WHEREAS, Box 55 is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, and is a member in good standing with the National Association of Fire Buffs; and

WHEREAS, Box 55 provides aid 24 hours per day, 365 days per year; and

WHEREAS, Box 55 is supported through fundraising and donations, which are used to purchase food, drinks, cooling equipment, and other necessary provisions to enable transport vehicles to offer rehabilitation services; and

WHEREAS, Box 55 is dedicated to all emergency workers and first responders, and provides them with hydration, rest and rehabilitation at the scene, which is a critical component of the health and welfare of first responders; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize these volunteers who give of their time and energy in making a difference in Davidson County by declaring March 28, 2020, as “Box 55 Day” in Nashville.


SECTION 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record recognizing March 28, 2020, as “Box 55 Day” in Nashville.

SECTION 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
