A resolution recognizing YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee for their efforts in standing against racism.
WHEREAS, April 25th marks the date of the annual “Stand Against Racism” event sponsored by YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee in 2019; and
WHEREAS, YWCA is an organization dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women throughout Nashville and Middle Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee was founded in 1898 and has a long tradition and history of bringing together women and families of all races for many years; and
WHEREAS, the Blue Triangle branch of the YWCA merged with the Central Association to become one integrated YWCA in 1964; and
WHEREAS, YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee is partnering with numerous organizations across the Middle Tennessee region to take a stand against racism on April 25, 2019 by taking the following pledge: “As an individual committed to social justice, I stand with the YWCA against racism and discrimination of any kind. I will commit to a lifetime of promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people in my community and in the world.”; and
WHEREAS, this pledge will be taken at an event hosted by the YWCA of Nashville & Middle Tennessee on April 25th at the Historic Metropolitan Courthouse and Public Square Park located in Downtown Nashville; and
WHEREAS under the leadership of President and CEO Sharon K. Roberson, Board Chair Wanda Lyle, Advocacy Committee Chair Janie Greenwood Harris, the YWCA will be joined at the event by individuals and organizations from across Nashville, including the Tennessee Human Rights Commission, Metro Human Relations Commission, A VOICE for the Reduction of Poverty, American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, American Muslim Advisory Council, Clergy for Tolerance, Coalition for Education About Immigration, Community Oversight Now, Conexión Américas, Equity Alliance, Fisk University, Hispanic Family Foundation, Islamic Center of Nashville, Jewish Federation of Nashville & Middle Tennessee, NAACP Nashville, Nashville for All of Us, Nashville International Center for Empowerment, Metro Nashville Office of New Americans, Open Table Nashville, Tennessee Educational Equity Coalition, Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, Tennessee Justice Center, The Nashville Jewish Social Justice Roundtable, Vanderbilt Divinity School – Public Theology and Racial Justice Collaborative, and Welcome Home!.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee for their efforts in standing against racism.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council further recognizes YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee for continually providing services to the entire Nashville community, including helping families leave abusive households by offering a 24-hour, seven day a week crisis and information hotline and the largest emergency domestic violence shelter for women and children, providing free adult education and HiSET testing, and mentoring and empowering 1000+ girls and boys across Metro Nashville Public Schools each year.
Section 3. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented at the “Stand Against Racism” event on April 25, 2019.
Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
