A resolution honoring the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office for sponsoring the “Music City Tackles Mental Health” summit.
WHEREAS, on March 5, 2018, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Mental Health America of Middle Tennessee to host a one-day mental health summit entitled “Music City Tackles Mental Health”; and
WHEREAS, the summit featured speakers, panelists, and professionals from across the country who came together to discuss one of the most urgent topics facing law enforcement today: the ever-growing crisis of incarcerating individuals with mental illness; and
WHEREAS, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office partner for this summit was Mental Health America, the nation’s oldest and largest mental health advocacy organization, whose local affiliate has been serving Middle Tennessee for 71 years; and
WHEREAS, in addition to this summit, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Hall, has become the most racially diverse government agency in Metro Davidson County from the top to bottom; and
WHEREAS, a signature reform led by Sheriff Daron Hall is the design and implementation of a Behavioral Care Center adjacent to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Downtown Detention Center, currently under construction, which will work to divert those arrested and those who meet certain criteria to a therapeutic environment in lieu of jail; and
WHEREAS, for over 15 years Sheriff Hall has actively reduced the length that individuals in Davidson County remain in custody by partnering with mental health, educational, and job training programs; and
WHEREAS, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Hall have collaborated with the Davidson County Criminal Clerk, Public Defender, District Attorney's Office, and Metropolitan Council to increase pretrial services and reduce high bail costs for low priority misdemeanors; and
WHEREAS, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Daron Hall, deserves recognition for its contributions to the safety and security of the citizens of Nashville by drawing attention to the important cause of decriminalizing mental illness.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY THAT:
Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office for organizing the one-day summit, titled “Music City Tackles Mental Health” to bring awareness to the crisis of incarcerating individuals with mental illness.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this resolution to Sheriff Daron Hall of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
