A resolution requesting the Metropolitan General Services Department, and all departments of the Metropolitan Government that display flags, to fly Metropolitan Government flags at half-staff for a period of one (1) year in honor and memory of students killed as a result of gun violence and as a reminder of the urgency of gun violence solutions.
WHEREAS, to date, 2018 has been a particularly dangerous year for students attending schools in the United States as a result of gun violence; and
WHEREAS, on May 18, 2018, eight (8) students were killed in Santa Fe, Texas. Prior to that, on February 14, 2018, fourteen (14) students were killed in Parkland, Florida. Prior to that, students were killed in shootings in Benton, Kentucky; Birmingham, Alabama; and Great Mills, Maryland; and
WHEREAS, Nashville has not been spared of the scourge of gun violence in schools. On February 9, 2018, a high school student was shot five times in the parking lot of Pearl-Cohn High School; and
WHEREAS, as of May 21, 2018, there have been twenty-two (22) school shootings in the United States this year involving injury or death -- averaging more than one (1) shooting per week; and
WHEREAS, in response to these depraved acts of senseless horror and violence -- shattering lives and forever depriving families of children and loved ones -- the public has asked elected officials in federal, state, and local government for meaningful solutions; and
WHEREAS, in the interests of maintaining pursuit of meaningful solutions as a priority for elected officials in Nashville and Davidson County, and in honor and memory of the students whose lives have been lost, it is fitting and appropriate that the flag of the Metropolitan Government be flown at half-staff for a period of one (1) year.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as requesting that the Metropolitan Department of General Services, and all departments of the Metropolitan Government that display flags of the Metropolitan Government, fly such flags at half-staff for a period of one (1) year from the effective date of this resolution in honor and memory of the students whose lives have been lost as a result of gun violence and as a daily reminder of the urgency of gun violence solutions.
Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is hereby directed to send a copy of this resolution to the director of the Metropolitan General Services, and to the directors of all Metropolitan Government departments.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its passage, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
