A resolution honoring the local athletes representing Nashville and Davidson County in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, Washington as part of the Metro Parks’ disABILITIES Program and Special Olympics Nashville.
WHEREAS, the Special Olympics USA Games is a premier, national sports competition that showcases the power and joy of sports at its highest levels and displays the awe-inspiring abilities of thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities; and
WHEREAS, the upcoming Special Olympics USA Games will be held in Seattle, Washington on July 1st through 6th, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Nashville and Davidson County will be honorably and ably represented by 10 local athletes who will compete in the Games against 4,000 other athletes from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as part of the Metro Parks Department’s disABILITIES Program and Special Olympics Nashville; and
WHEREAS, the ten (10) local athletes who will be contending for Olympic gold while representing Nashville and Davidson County are:
- Kenny Carpenter – Unified Volleyball
- Ryan Cate – Unified Volleyball
- Kevin Evans – Unified Volleyball
- Patricia Kostiw – Unified Volleyball
- Josh Putman – Unified Volleyball
- Gideon Weigel – Unified Volleyball
- Michelle Greenway – Powerlifting
- Keke Hinds – Track & Field
- Tracey Griffin – Unified Golf
- Rachel Johnson – Bocce
WHEREAS, the entire Special Olympics Nashville Delegation consists of these 10 incredible athletes, as well as 7 unified partner athletes and 2 coaches, all of whom are part of the Metro Parks’ disABILITIES Programs. (Unified Sports are competitions in which athletes with disabilities participate alongside peer partners who do not have a disability.) The delegation will compete in 5 of the 14 sports offered at the Games, including powerlifting, unified volleyball, and golf; and
WHEREAS, the abilities, determination, and accomplishments of these athletes make every citizen of Nashville proud, and if is fitting and proper that these Olympians be congratulated for their achievement and wished well in the upcoming competition.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1: That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as commending and congratulating the 10 local athletes, and the entire Special Olympics Nashville Delegation, who will be representing Nashville and Davidson County in the upcoming Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, Washington.
Section 2. That this resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
