Resolution RS2019-1603

A resolution recognizing the grand opening of the Nashville Zoo’s new HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center on February 23, 2019.

WHEREAS, on February 23, 2019, the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere will celebrate the grand opening of its new HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center; and

WHEREAS, the current veterinary facility was built in 1989, and intended for a very small collection of indigenous species when the property was under the management of Grassmere Wildlife Park; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Zoo’s tremendous growth over the past 20 years and the planned doubling of the animal collection over the next 8 years highlights a need for the new, comprehensive medical facility; and

WHEREAS, recently, the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere showed off its new $13 million HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center at an event for donors; and

WHEREAS, as the lead contributor to the project, HCA Healthcare Inc. donated $4 million to help build the facility with additional contributions from the Frist Foundation, the Cal Turner Family Foundation and the Memorial Foundation; and

WHEREAS, the HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center consists of a 26,000 square foot facility that includes areas for observation, diagnosis, radiology, surgery, laboratory, pharmacy, administrative functions, staff sleeping rooms, an animal ICU, and an event space; and

WHEREAS, the new medical facility will also serve as a teaching center, connecting local colleges and universities with opportunities to learn about diagnosis, treatment, and management of animal health; and

WHEREAS, educational opportunities will further extend to visitors of all ages, as a viewing gallery will allow Nashville Zoo guests to observe surgeries and treatment procedures as well as the nursery; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Zoo is one of the top tourist attractions in Nashville and continues to Grow Wild by bringing an intriguing population of animals to the facility, establishing a world class veterinary clinic, and offering a property that can host over 1 million visitors; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council has historically supported and continues to support the Nashville Zoo through legislative measures that help the facility maintain its program services; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and celebrate the Nashville Zoo’s new HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center and offer our best wishes for many years of continued success.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the grand opening of the Nashville Zoo’s new HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center on February 23, 2019.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the doctors and staff of HCA Healthcare Veterinary Center.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
