A resolution recognizing and welcoming the Most Reverend J. Mark Spalding as the 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Nashville.
WHEREAS, on November 21, 2017, Pope Francis announced that Rev. J. Mark Spalding would be installed as the 12th Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nashville, following the untimely death of the Most Reverend David R. Choby on June 3, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Rev. J. Mark Spalding was ordained as Bishop and installed as the head of the Nashville diocese on Friday, February 2, 2018 at Sagrado Corazon in the Catholic Pastoral Center in Nashville, Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, the Very Reverend J. Mark Spalding, a native of Fredericktown, Kentucky, had previously served as pastor of Holy Trinity Parish and Holy Name Parish and as the vicar general in the Archdiocese of Louisville; and
WHEREAS, following his ordination into the priesthood on August 3, 1991, Bishop Spalding served in multiple positions throughout Kentucky, including associate pastor at St. Joseph and chaplain at Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Kentucky; associate pastor at St. Augustine in Lebanon, Kentucky; associate pastor at St. Margaret Mary in Louisville, Kentucky; and pastor of Immaculate Conception in La Grange, Kentucky. He also served as a judge, judicial vicar, and director of the tribunal for the archdiocese in Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, prior to entering the priesthood, Bishop Spalding attended Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Kentucky and St. Meinrad Seminary in St. Meinrad, Indiana. He received a master’s of religious studies and licentiate in canon law from American University in Louvain, Belgium; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Spalding will now serve as head of the Diocese of Nashville, which includes approximately 76,000 registered Catholics in 53 parishes covering 38 counties in Middle Tennessee, as well as 3 missions; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and honor the ordination and installation of the Most Reverend J. Mark Spalding as the Bishop of the Diocese of Nashville, and to welcome him to his new home in Nashville.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and honoring the ordination and installation of the Most Reverend J. Mark Spalding as the Bishop of the Diocese of Nashville, and further welcoming him to Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to Bishop Spalding.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
