Resolution RS2020-289

A resolution to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Earth Day.

WHEREAS, on April 22, 1970, the United States celebrated its first Earth Day; and

WHEREAS, on that day, twenty million Americans (10% of the U.S. population at the time) joined together to work for a cleaner planet; and

WHEREAS, now recognized as the planet's largest civic event, Earth Day led to the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act; and

WHEREAS, this year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Earth Day in the United States and this year’s theme is climate action; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day 2020 seeks to engage the creativity, innovation, ambition, and bravery of our citizens in addressing climate change; and

WHEREAS, in furtherance of this goal, five Earth Day campaigns have been instituted to motivate one billion people worldwide; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day 2020 is promoting a cleaner, safer world that supports all of us.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2020.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
