Resolution RS2020-258

A resolution honoring the 2020 Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament in Nashville.

WHEREAS, on March 27 through 29, 2020, Nashville will host the Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament (“MIST”) regional competition at Tennessee State University; and

WHEREAS, MIST Nashville is now in its seventh year, with over 2,000 students having competed in the tournament; and

WHEREAS, MIST is a fun, educational, interactive program of competitions and workshops geared towards bringing high school students together from around the nation to develop leadership, communication, and other creative skills, all while gaining a deeper understanding of Islam and Muslims; and

WHEREAS, MIST currently features 31 different competitions, including basketball, soccer, debate, math, fashion design, science fair, short film, improv, graphic design, and Quran, among many others; and

WHEREAS, after competing in Nashville at the regional level, the top competitors will go on to face the other regions at MIST Nationals; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the competitions, MIST includes workshops on topics such as Islamophobia, leadership, mental health, and more; and

WHEREAS, MIST events are held throughout the United States and Canada; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes this year’s MIST in Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring the 2020 Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament in Nashville, which will be held March 27 through 29 at Tennessee State University.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
