Resolution RS2020-430

A resolution recognizing the late Anna Jenesse Shepherd for her service to Nashville.

WHEREAS, Anna Shepherd moved to Nashville in 1990 from her beloved Louisiana with her husband Larry to raise their children Melissa, Michael, and Jimmy; and

WHEREAS, she was a big supporter of arts education and served as president of the McGavock Band Boosters; and

WHEREAS, Anna was a long-standing board member of the McGavock Cluster Coalition, an organization that seeks to increase the percentage of McGavock High School students graduating with the skills and support necessary for post-secondary education; and

WHEREAS, Anna was a member of the St. Stephen Catholic Community and served on the Parish Council and the Ladies of Charity; and

WHEREAS, Anna’s community involvement also extended to her local HOA board and as president of the Donelson-Hermitage Neighborhood Association; and

WHEREAS, she was a member of the Rotary Club, the Exchange Club, and the Donelson-Hermitage Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, Anna continued to focus on connecting leaders in the Donelson-Hermitage community as an alumni and board member of L’Evate (formerly Leadership Donelson-Hermitage), where she most recently served as selection chair; and

WHEREAS, Anna was known as a champion for public education and was elected in 2010 to represent the McGavock cluster of schools on the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education. She was currently serving as the Chair of the school board, a role she had previously held for three years over two different periods; and

WHEREAS, Anna had a natural gift for putting MNPS students first, she often encouraged area students to contact her directly with their suggestions or concerns; and

WHEREAS, Anna led with warmth and compassion, while she could also be tough, and she wouldn’t hesitate to let you know if you were deviating from the mission of providing students with a quality education; and

WHEREAS, she was known for her advocacy of not only students, but also teachers, staff, paraprofessionals, and bus drivers; and

WHEREAS, all of Metropolitan Nashville mourns Anna’s loss on June 9, 2020 and sends its deepest condolences to Anna’s husband Larry and their children; and

WHEREAS, Anna will be greatly missed by the members of the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education who have come to rely on her leadership and her efforts to improve educational opportunities for all children.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the late Anna Jenesse Shepherd for her service to Nashville.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the family of Anna Jenesse Shepherd.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
