Resolution RS2018-1412
A resolution recognizing the historic election of Karen Johnson as Davidson County Register of Deeds.
WHEREAS, on August 2, 2018, Karen Johnson was elected Davidson County Register of Deeds, after advancing from the primary on May 1, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Karen Johnson has made history as the first African-American and first woman to serve as Davidson County Register of Deeds; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson moved with her family to Nashville in 1985; and
WHEREAS, she attended Tennessee State University, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a Master’s of Business Administration and Organizational Management from Trevecca Nazarene University; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson has served in many roles in both the private sector, including as a human resources professional; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson has also held many public offices, including as a member of the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Public Education, a commissioner on the Metro Nashville Board of Zoning Appeals, a member of the Metro Nashville Board of Parks and Recreation; and
WHEREAS, from 2011 and until taking office as Register of Deeds, Ms. Johnson served as Metropolitan Council Member for District 29; and
WHEREAS, as a Council Member, she served on several committees, was elected as President Pro Tempore for a one year term between 2015 and 2016, served on the Tennessee Municipal League Board of Directors, and was elected to the National League of Cities Board of Directors in 2017; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson has also served Nashville through her involvement with several nonprofits and community organizations; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council congratulate Karen Johnson upon her historic election and recognize her years of service to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Karen Johnson upon her election as Register of Deeds.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Karen Johnson.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
