A resolution recognizing Metro Water Services’ National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program for being formally recognized as the Best Phase 1 Organization by the Water Environment Federation’s Stormwater Congress.
WHEREAS, on September 23, 2019 the Water Environment Federation (WEF) will recognize Metro Water Services’ National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program at their Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) in Chicago, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, WEF is a worldwide organization devoted to protecting public health and the environment that seeks to inspire leaders to seek new and innovative ways to meet and exceed regulatory requirements in ways that are technically effective and financially efficient; and
WHEREAS, the National Municipal Stormwater and Green Infrastructure Awards program was established to recognize high-performing regulated Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s); and
WHEREAS, there are three award categories, including Program Management, Innovation, and Overall Highest Score, which indicates the best performing programs. Each category has winners in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 communities. Phase 1 communities are medium and large cities or certain counties with populations of 100,000 or more, and Phase 2 communities are smaller entities that operate an MS4; and
WHEREAS, it is Metro’s long-term goal to reduce pollutant loadings from the MS4 as much as possible so as to remove from the federal 303(d) list a majority of the streams that are indicated as being impaired by MS4 runoff; and
WHEREAS, Metro Water Services’ NPDES program implements specific pollution prevention programs designed to improve the quality of Metro’s waterways, particularly as it relates to improving the quality of discharges from Metro’s MS4; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council commends Metro Water Services for the recognition of the NPDES program as the Best Phase 1 Organization and its categorization as Gold Level in Innovation and Gold Level in Project Management.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Metro Water Services’ National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program for being formally recognized as the Best Phase 1 Organization by the Water Environment Federation’s Stormwater Congress.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
