Resolution RS2018-1511

A resolution recognizing Dr. Bill Paul for his service to Nashville and Davidson County as Director of Health.

WHEREAS, Dr. Bill Paul joined the Metro Public Health Department as Director in July 2007; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Paul advanced the Health Department’s role as community health strategist, leading and facilitating collaborative efforts to improve community health and health equity; and

WHEREAS, under his guidance, the Metro Public Health Department advanced a healthier urban built environment by launching the B-Cycle bike share program that now has 36 B-stations and over 275 bicycles available throughout the city; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Paul helped shape the Lentz Public Health Center on Charlotte Avenue as a showcase of healthy design, and also sponsored the publication of Shaping the Healthy City: The Nashville Plan, the product of five years of planning, research, design and writing that explores the relationships between the built environment and public health; and

WHEREAS, in addition, Dr. Paul led a Community Mental Health Systems Improvement workgroup that secured funding for crisis services to divert mentally ill people who are in crisis into prompt treatment rather than jail; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Paul effectively advocated to increase the number of school nurses serving Metro Nashville Public School students; and

WHEREAS, as a result of these beneficial public health initiatives and policies, Nashville has seen an improvement in the overall well-being of its residents and was named one of the 10 national finalists for the 2018 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Dr. Bill Paul for his 11 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County as Director of Health.


Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Dr. Bill Paul for his service to Nashville and Davidson County as Director of Health.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Bill Paul.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
