Resolution RS2018-1218
A resolution honoring and congratulating the Franklin Road Academy Wrestling Team and their coach, Doug Newman.
WHEREAS, Doug Newman, the exceptional wrestling coach at Franklin Road Academy (FRA) in Nashville, Tennessee, earned a listing in the prestigious National Federation of State High School Associations’ (NFHS) record book for the sport of wrestling; and
WHEREAS, wrestling is a challenging sport, and being a successful wrestler requires desire, dedication, determination, decisiveness and discipline; and
WHEREAS, coaching wrestling is a demanding profession and requires the ability to encourage and motivate athletes to excel under physically and mentally challenging circumstances; and
WHEREAS, Coach Doug Newman is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and an excellent role model for wrestlers and wrestling coaches; and
WHEREAS, the Franklin Road Academy wrestling team scored 616 takedowns during the 2017-2018 season, earning the team a listing in the NFHS record book, and replacing Park Ridge Maine Township East High School of Illinois, which had 599 takedowns and held this record for the past 39 years; and
WHEREAS, utilizing his expertise and guidance, Coach Newman lead two other Nashville Public School wrestling teams – Hunters Lane and Stratford STEM Magnet – to earn a total of 19 team listings and 5 individual listings in the NFHS record book for the sport of wrestling; and
WHEREAS, Franklin Road Academy is the first Division II school from the state of Tennessee to earn a team listing in the National Federation of State High School Associations’ national record book in the sport of wrestling; and
WHEREAS, Franklin Road Academy is the third school wrestling team under Doug Newman’s leadership to earn a total of 20 team and 5 individual listings in the NFHS national record book for the sport of wrestling; and
WHEREAS, the only wrestling teams in the state of Tennessee that have earned a team listing in the NFHS record book have all had Doug Newman as their Head Wrestling Coach; and
WHEREAS, Coach Newman has 341 dual meet wins, and is one of the few wrestling coaches in Tennessee to have won over 300 dual meets in his career; and
WHEREAS, the Franklin Road Academy team has earned the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s (TSSAA) highest academic award given to teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher; and
WHEREAS, the 2017-2018 Franklin Road Academy wrestling team is the youngest team Coach Newman has ever coached, consisting of two eighth graders: Thatcher Frankfather and Noah Parrot, four freshman: Harris Brin, Sam Coppock, William Roberts, and Stephen Vickers, five sophomores: Camdem Frankfather, Ethan Rhoden, Kendall Warpool, Will Wheeler, and Drew White, three juniors: William Bruns, Tymon Mitchell, and Jonathan Stoxstill-Diggs, and one senior, Mark Austin; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and congratulate the Franklin Road Academy Wrestling Team and Coach Doug Newman for their hard work and achievements.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as congratulating the Franklin Road Academy Wrestling Team and their coach, Doug Newman.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Doug Newman.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
