Two new exhibitions,, Mosaic Arts International 2019  Fine Art Juried Exhibition and One Hundred Moments in Mosaic, open in the Parthenon Museum’s East and West Galleries on January 26, 2019. The pairing of contemporary artists with the ancient art form of mosaic has resulted in new and exciting work and the Parthenon is pleased to introduce visitors to some of the latest examples of this striking medium. The two exhibitions have been produced by the Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA), a non-profit organization dedicated to educating, inspiring, and promoting excellence in the mosaic arts.

A mosaic is a work of art made by assembling small pieces of variously colored materials such as stone, glass, tile, and shell to create a design or picture. The earliest discovered western examples of this art form date to the 3rd millennium BCE and mosaics became quite popular in Greek and Roman architecture, especially for floors in houses and public baths.

This exhibit is in both the East and West Galleries and will be up through May 19th
