Detectives Investigating Fatal Exchange of Gunfire Outside Trinity Lane Convenience Market
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Homicide Unit detectives are investigating an exchange of gunfire Sunday morning outside the Marathon gas station, 234 W. Trinity Lane, that claimed the life of Dwight Stuart, 60.
Officers responded to shots fired at 7:50 a.m. and found Stuart lying in the parking lot outside his Dodge Ram pickup truck. He was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he died.
Surveillance video from inside the market shows Stuart parking in the lot. A short time later, a second white pickup truck parked next to him. After several minutes, Stuart exited his vehicle, armed with what appears to be a handgun. He approached the back passenger door of the white pickup where an apparent exchange of gunfire occurred between Stuart and an individual in the backseat. Stuart ran back to his truck where he collapsed.
The white pickup truck fled the scene. Two men later arrived at separate hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening gunshot wounds. During interviews, it was learned that Stuart and one of the injured men, Danny Dixon Jr., 29, were involved in an ongoing dispute over the theft of a handgun.
No charges have been placed at present as the investigation continues, including whether the fatal shooting was in self-defense. Detectives will staff their findings with the District Attorney’s Office.
