FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The case of a 13-year-old boy who was critically injured after being struck by a freight train Tuesday night is classified as attempted suicide.
Dorian Piper of Lebanon Pike suffered extensive injuries and is in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The engineer reported that Piper was walking on a set of tracks adjacent to those on which the freight train was traveling. The engineer said he sounded the train’s horn several times and that Piper responded by lifting his hand, looking over his shoulder and crossing onto the tracks the train was on. Piper was struck at 8:25 p.m. and was found by officers under the train near 415 Spence Lane breathing but unresponsive. Piper’s family reported that he was caught smoking what was believed to be marijuana just prior to him leaving home last evening.
