Singin’ the 60’s!”
Music That Twisted, Rocked, and Spoke Its Mind!

Nashville, TN ---“Singin’ the 60’s: Music That Twisted, Rocked, and Spoke Its Mind!” rolls into the Z. Alexander Looby Theater next month with an entire decade of oldies but goodies on the program.  Sponsored by Metro Parks and Arts in the Parks, this funny and energetic musical revue is performed by the talented youth from the department’s Young Performers Program.  The play gives the audience a glimpse through a kaleidoscope of music that defined a generation.

“To put an entire decade of fabulous, ground-breaking music in one evening’s show,” says Metro Parks’ Carolyn German, “was a blast of a challenge.”  German, who created and directs the play, notes that having musical director Kevin Madill on board has been wonderful.  “His musicianship is such an asset.” she says.    “We cover the early 60’s dance-craze hits, the Beatles, the Rat Pack songs, the great rock tunes, all of it!”  German proudly notes that a live, professional, 4-piece band provides accompaniment for the performers.

German and Madill both noted how surprised they were at the first rehearsal when (other than a few kids knowing a couple of Beatles songs), most of the cast had never heard any of the classic gems that appear in the show, including:  Up, Up and Away, It’s My Party, For Once in My Life, Peppermint Twist, Abraham, Martin and John, Born to Be Wild, and more.  “They are learning new music, the historical context, and all the while honing that musical theater craft,” says German.  And if Go-Go Boots and Love Beads aren’t enough, the show’s fast-paced revue format allows room for comedic salutes to 60’s greats like Laugh-In, and even some light-hearted spoofing of the game shows and commercials of the era.

“Singin’ the 60’s”  bursts with the talents of , Spenser Lee, Caitlin Dobbins, Brittan Gilmore, Phillip Baker,           Tre Dickerson, Kira Hinchey, Sofia Sherman,  Anna Mains, Glory Phelps, Rachel Hinchey, Katelyn Turner-Leftwich, Grace Iheme, and Kalli Solon.

This marks the 6th year of summer musical presentations for the Metro Parks Theater Department, where young performers learn the skills and craft of performing in Musical Theater from a team of professionals.  These audition-based opportunities for ages 9 - 18 are made possible through Metro Parks, with the generous support of Arts in the Parks.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m., June 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 with a Sunday Matinee on June 23 at 2 p.m.   Tickets for this family-friendly show are $5 (all ages) and may be purchased at the door by cash or check.
