'Artober Nashville’ Returns With New Events, Including Launch of ‘THRIVE’ Neighborhood Arts Program, New TEDxNashville Collaboration

The Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission (Metro Arts) today unveiled a series of new events for Artober Nashville 2014, the city’s fourth annual month-long celebration of everything arts and culture in the month of October.

Hundreds of events are already scheduled for the month, during which Metro Arts seeks to connect every Nashvillian to the thriving creative community throughout the city. Topping the calendar for Artober Nashville 2014 is a series of new events and the continuation of successful events that are part of the Artober kaleidoscope that provides something for everyone during October.

Artober Nashville has grown each year – more programming, larger audiences, new collaborations – so now our month-long celebration is one of the largest in the country that is devoted to the arts,” said Jennifer Cole, executive director of Metro Arts. “Our success is due to our great community partners, our commission staff and Nashvillians who support and enjoy the various events throughout the month. I am especially excited about our new programming this year and the return of some great favorites.”

Launching Oct. 1 is the newest Metro Arts program, THRIVE, a micro-funding program for artist-driven projects that are innovative, diverse and include a clear neighborhood impact. Funding of amounts up to $4,000 is available for projects that meet the criteria, and information and applications for THRIVE are available online at the Metro Arts THRIVE page.

“An original goal with Artober Nashville was to take the arts everywhere in our community during the month of October. We have achieved that goal with the numerous events sponsored by our partners, but THRIVE is the next step – an ongoing program focusing on the city’s diverse neighborhoods and providing funds for innovative artist-driven projects that improve community,” said Cole.

Metro Arts will also sponsor Audiences Everywhere™, an audience development workshop presented by consultant Matt Lehrman, nationally known for his approaches to arts marketing. Admission is $10 to the program, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 27, at the Nashville Public Library, 615 Church St.

A new event, in partnership with TEDxNashville, is TedxNashvilleSalon: CREO, an evening that brings together leading innovators, thinkers, performers and artists for one night to explore the concept of creativity and its influence on work and community. The event is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Oz Nashville, 6172 Cockrill Bend Circle, with a $15 per-person admission.

“Creo is Latin, meaning to create, and our collaboration with TEDxNashville will be an signature event to cap Artober for 2014 – an evening that will be full of creativity and engagement that will bring together all types of Nashvillians to focus on how creativity shapes our world,” said Cole.

There are four signature community events scheduled for Artober Nashville as the celebration drives creation of new programs and collaborations that brings art to Nashvillians.

New or expanded programs include:

Cheekwood Pop-Up Gallery: The Pop-Up Gallery is located in the L Gallery, 73 Arcade, features Georgia artist Lonnie Holley and is presented by Pinnacle Bank. The gallery opens at 5:30 on Saturday, Oct. 4, during the First Saturday Art Crawl, and will remain open from 11 to 2 p.m., daily from Oct. 6-11.

Southern Festival of Books: For the first time, the festival will feature an Artober Nashville Performing Arts Stage from Oct. 10-12 on the festival grounds at Legislative Plaza and the Tennessee State Capitol.

Nashville Print Crawl: The Nashville Print Crawl returns this year. The public is invited to participate in making art at nine local print shops during this free scavenger-hunt-meets-progressive-dinner event that is scheduled from 2 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Frist Center for the Visual Arts Bollards: The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is commissioning local artists to decorate the ornamental bollards at the center’s Turner Courtyard entrance. Designs will be revealed on Saturday, Oct. 11

Also new in 2014 is a partnership with Nashville Education, Community, and Arts Television (NECAT), which will broadcast specially curated Artober Nashville programming throughout October. Nightly from 7 to 9 p.m., the community-access station will showcase original content submitted by local artists, cultural venues and arts organizations. Viewers can tune in to Music City Arts channel on Comcast Channel 9 in Davidson County and on AT&T U-verse at Channel 99 in 19 Middle Tennessee counties or watch online via

Artober Nashville is held in conjunction with National Arts and Humanities Month, designated by Americans for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The 2013 month of ‘Artober’ generated 849 events sponsored by 349 community partners. More than 350,000 participants participated in the events.

Fifth Third Bank returns as Artober Nashville’s presenting sponsor and is joined by lead sponsors, The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee’s online arts and entertainment guide, and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
