Winter Heating Safety

As temperatures drop, the Nashville Fire Department urges residents to use caution with home heating equipment.

In 2011, heating equipment was involved in an estimated 53,600 home fires, 400 deaths, 1,520 injuries and more than $893 million in property damage, nationwide. Portable heaters can be particularly dangerous.

But these fires can be prevented.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe this winter:
• Keep anything that could catch fire at least 3 feet away from any heat source, whether it be a space heater, candle, radiator or fireplace
• Never use an oven to heat a home
• Turn off space heaters when leaving a room or going to bed
• Have your chimneys cleaned and inspected every year
• Make sure you have working smoke alarms by testing them out every month
