Officer Recovering from Stab Wound to Left Hand
April 12, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Central Precinct Officer Josh Hausman is recovering at home with a stitched left hand after being stabbed Monday night while trying to break up a fight on S. 7th Street in the James Cayce public housing development.
Officer Hausman and two colleagues were dispatched to a fight call across from the Martha O’Brien Center at 9 p.m. As they were speaking with people there, a fight broke out just north of their location. The three officers gave verbal commands to persons in the very large crowd, who appeared to be between the ages of 16 and 20, to stop fighting and disperse. Their commands went unheeded. Officer Hausman was trying to break up a fight between two females when he felt pain in his left hand. He saw that he had suffered a large cut and went back to his police car to stop the bleeding.
Officer Hausman was not able to determine whether he or one of the female combatants was the intended target of the person with the sharp object. The officers reported that the crowd was not particularly aggressive toward them, but just seemed to disregard their presence.
East Precinct detectives are working to identify the person who cut Officer Hausman. Anyone with information about that individual is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
Officer Hausman joined the MNPD in June 2013.
