Arrest Made in Fatal Hit & Run Crash
December 28, 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Joan Cortez-Estrella, 28, was arrested last night for a December 18th hit & run collision on Nolensville Pike near Welshwood Drive that killed an unidentified pedestrian.
Cortez-Estrella was identified as a person of interest after Midtown Precinct officers located a red pick-up truck on Edmondson Pike with front end damage consistent with vehicle parts left at the crash scene. The truck was towed. When Cortez-Estrella contacted police about his truck, he agreed to meet officers Tuesday at the South Precinct. During an interview with crash investigator Officer Nathan Dungan, Cortez-Estrella admitted he was driving the pick up when it was involved in the fatal crash.
Cortez-Estrella is charged with driving without a license, failure to provide proof of insurance, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, failure to render aid, and failure to provide immediate notice of a crash to police. He is being held in lieu of $14,500 bond.
The Medical Examiner continues efforts to identify the victim, a black woman who is believed to have been homeless. Her fingerprints have been sent to the FBI.
