12/4/2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

East Precinct detectives early this morning charged Jose Francisco Aguilar, 47, with criminal homicide for allegedly hitting Barry Lafferty with his car Sunday at 5 p.m. in the 1800 block of Meridian Street following two physical altercations.

The investigation shows that prior to being struck, Lafferty, 48, and another man, Juan Carahza, 50, got into a physical fight inside the Trinity Lane Market at 1905 Meridian Street.  Carahza left the market in a black pickup truck.   He told detectives that he called Aguilar and told him that he had been assaulted.  Aguilar reportedly came to the market looking for the man who had assaulted Carahza.  Aguilar is seen leaving the market driving a dark four door sedan.   Prior to being struck, Lafferty was physically assaulted by three men at the intersection of Edwin Street and Meridian Street.  After the assault, Lafferty then continued walking southbound on Meridian Street.  He was struck a short time later by the driver of a dark colored sedan.  The driver fled the scene.  Lafferty was transported to Skyline Medical Center where he died.

Aguilar was later located and admitted driving the vehicle that struck Lafferty. According to witnesses, the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and crossed the double yellow dividing line prior to the collision.

Detectives are seeking the public’s assistance in locating the suspect vehicle, a four door purple/maroon Honda Accord.  Aguilar told police that he had parked the car in the area of Gatewood Avenue and Dickerson Pike but the car was not located there.  The Honda would have front end damage, especially on the driver’s side.

Aguilar is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.
