26-Year-Old Man Fatally Injured After Being Run Over by Tourist Van on 4th Avenue South
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The 26-year-old man fatally injured at 122 4th Avenue South late Tuesday night after falling from the running board of a tour van and then being run over by a rear tire of the vehicle was visiting Nashville from Mary Esther, Florida. Efforts are continuing to notify his family.
The vehicle involved is a Dodge Sprinter van that was transporting a tour group. It was being driven by Gregory Grden, 55, of Skokie, Illinois.
The investigation to this point shows that the van was parked in the pay lot at 122 4th Avenue South. As the tour group was getting into the van, the 26-year-old approached and attempted to get in. Grden told him that he didn’t belong in the vehicle. The 26-year-old then reportedly asked Grden if he wanted to fight. Grden said he told the passengers to close the side sliding door. The 26-year-old got onto the running board and was reportedly attempting to open the door as the vehicle pulled out of the parking lot and turned onto 4th Avenue South. It was then that the victim apparently fell from the running board and was run over by one of the van’s rear tires.
Grden continued driving, saying that he was unaware that the 26-year-old had been run over. He and his passengers returned to the scene a short time later after being located by officers. Grden is fully cooperating with the MNPD’s fatal crash team. Grden showed no indication of impairment.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct toxicology testing to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the 26-year-old’s actions.
