Detectives Asking for Assistance in Identifying a Potential Witness in Last November's Death of Joe Shelton

Central Precinct detectives investigating the death last November 20 of Joe Shelton on I-24 east are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a man being sought as a potential witness.

Shelton died after a 23-pound piece of concrete went through his windshield. Detectives have not determined how that happened, and have yet to identify anyone who witnessed it.

The individual being sought entered the Exxon Tiger Mart near the Shelby Avenue Bridge just after the concrete is believed to have impacted Shelton’s windshield. The man is white, middle-aged, wore a black hoodie, and is believed to have been homeless. Staff members at the market report that he has frequented the store, but have not seen him during the past several weeks.

On the morning of November 20, he was in the market for several minutes and got a cup of coffee. Detectives want to speak with the man to determine if he saw or heard anything that will advance the investigation into Shelton’s death. All efforts to identify him thus far have been unsuccessful.

Anyone recognizing the man from surveillance video provided by the Tiger Mart is asked to contact Central Precinct Detective Tim Codling at 615-862-4284. Access video surveillance
