Investigation Leads to Identification of Hit and Run Driver in August Pedestrian Collision in South Nashville
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Crash investigators have identified the hit and run van driver who on August 25 struck a male pedestrian on Nolensville Pike and Elysian Fields Road, fatally injuring him.
An arrest warrant charging Miguel Planas, 45, with leaving the scene of a personal injury crash has been issued. Planas is last known to have lived on McMurray Drive in South Nashville, but has reportedly fled to Florida.
The man struck by the van, Lino Vargas Gutierrez, 49, died on September 22, nearly a month after the collision.
The investigation by Officer Kevin Coleman led to information that the van, which had significant damage to the hood, had been taken to a body shop on Ezell Pike for repairs. Information provided by the body shop led to officers contacting the owner of the van, who said that Planas, one of his employees, had been driving it on August 25.
Gutierrez was crossing Nolensville Pike from east to west. A vehicle stopped in one of the traffic lanes to let him by. Gutierrez was hit by the van as he walked into the adjacent lane.
