School System Security Officer Charged with Assaulting Student

Metropolitan Schools security officer Andre Tyus, 40, today surrendered downtown on an arrest warrant charging him with assaulting a 12-year-old student at Martin Center on Fairfax Avenue, which included lifting him up by the arms and holding him off the ground against a school interior wall.

Youth Services Detective Sharissa Perez responded to the student’s home on the evening of November 16, the day of the assault, after his mother called police. She noted that the 12-year-old had several bruises on his body. During the investigation, a judicial subpoena was served for video from the school. It shows Tyus holding the student off the ground against the wall.

Tyus initially denied the allegation when he was interviewed by Detective Perez until he was informed that the police had viewed video from the school.

Tyus’ bond on the assault charge is set at $2,500.
