Nearly 65% of Vehicles Stolen in 2019 Had Keys Left Inside or Made Available to Thieves

Start the New Year off right by locking your car doors, taking your keys, and securing your valuables, especially guns!

A review of stolen vehicle reports in Nashville from Sunday, December 22 through Saturday, December 28, shows that 64% of the automobiles taken (37 of 58) were easy targets because the keys were left inside or made available to thieves. Three of the 58 vehicles stolen were left running without the driver present.

In 2019, nearly 65% of the automobiles stolen (1,817 of 2,804) were taken with keys---305 of those were left running without the driver present. Additionally, 747 guns were stolen from vehicles last year.

The police department’s continuing PARK SMART campaign strongly urges citizens to lock their automobile doors, secure any valuables---including guns, and REMOVE THE KEYS.
